the Widow of Zarephath. I Kings 17 May I remember my God, when fear, worry, and hopelessness creep in my being… When I want all the answers for the future, now… When I’m frozen in indecision and not knowing…
Another widow, struggling with life, how to live… Her food had reached it’s end, just enough for one last meal. We meet her collecting sticks to cook this last meal, then lay down and die… die, quit, strive no more, anguish no more, just sleep into escape. Wanting life.. life with food and drink and love and strength… life, yet life eluded her with nourishment at it’s last bit. No hope, no strength, no help… she succumbs to the reality of hopelessness.
This is the woman that God chose, for the man of God to enter her home and be cared for by her… This woman, the man of God told to follow her plan of giving up… but just feed me one small cake with water first. This woman with nothing to lose, at death’s door, shares her last meal, still loves, still cares, still helps.
The miraculous was given to this woman… daily sustenance… Bit by bit God replenished her food… Bit by bit she, her son, and Elijah ate daily to contentment. Food brought strength of body and spirit, food brought a willing service to others. Service brought joy and companionship into her home.
God knew this woman, knew this woman through and through. God saved this woman from death and hopelessness. God gave food, company, service, joy, love and hope to this woman. From the depths of darkness to the light of our morning sun, God intervened and had mercy and gave this woman life.
